Myspace sued

Universal files copyright lawsuit against - Universal Music Group is suing MySpace, claiming the network site has infringed the copyright of thousands of its artists' work.
Universal, which is the world's largest music company, filed the lawsuit in California. It accuses MySpace of allowing its 125 million users to share music and videos on the site without permission. The company has artists such as Guns N' Roses, Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Keane and Razorlight on its roster.
The legal action follows several months of talks on music rights which broke down on Thursday. Universal claims thousands of links to music from its biggest artists are widely available on MySpace, even ahead of their release to music stores."Businesses that seek to trade off on our content, and the hard work of our artists and songwriters, shouldn't be free to do so without permission and without fairly compensating the content creators," Universal Music said in a statement. The company estimated maximum statutory damages for each copyrighted work at $150,000.
