Case study: areas of study

Case study: areas of study

Technology: What the technology allows audiences and institutions to do that they couldn’t do before.
Convergence: multiple technologies being brought together to form a new product.
Linear/non-linear- linear experiences are those that move in straight line from start to finish E.g. the cinema.

Digitisation: At its most basic form all digital material is made up of a series of 0’s and 1’s. this means that the material be reproduced perfectly.

Institutions: How media institution are converging media interests to increase profit.
Interactivity: Is a two-way communication and in the context of NMT’s means content that is reactive to the audiences choices.

Audience: What are audiences doing with their new media technologies? How are traditional experiences of the media changing? You will carry out audience research, asking opinions and investigating consumption patterns.
Personalisation: Is their ability to offer users a personalised experience. E.g. Sky+ allows users to personalise their viewing schedule including the ability to pause live TV and automatically record their favourite programmes.
Linear/non-linear: linear experiences are those that move in straight line from start to finish E.g. the cinema.
Interactivity: Is a two-way communication and in the context of NMT’s means content that is reactive to the audiences choices.
Democratisation: the ability to communicate your opinions and ideas, or share your creative output. The digital divide shouldn’t be forgotten, however; not everyone has Internet access never mind a blog.
Issues: Does the new media technology encourage illegal activity or increased spending or harm children? Will shops close or people lose jobs as a result?

The Future:
If the technology is extended, what could happen? How could media practices be different in future, based in the potential of current technologies?
Digitisation: At its most basic form all digital material is made up of a series of 0’s and 1’s. this means that the material be reproduced perfectly.
